Identity, memory and imagination: Guided imagery and imagery rescripting and the new science of autobiographical memory

Imagery rescripting has become an evidence-based intervention that is widely used in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), as well as in many integrative therapies, including schema therapy. Such imagery methods have a long history within psychotherapy (and even before), and include Carl Gustav Jung’s active imagination, the tradition of hypnotherapy that stems from Pierre Janet, and Hans Carl Leuner’s guided affective imagery. However, in contemporary use in CBT, and particularly in schema therapy, there are new and distinctive features. In part these are related to the integration and refinement of theory, to an enhanced understanding of the nature of emotion-focused work in therapy, and to a modern understanding of the nature of autobiographical memory.
The workshop will present the rationale for imagery work within a schema therapy framework and will include several extended case examples with audio extracts from sessions that illustrate transformative processes which are potentiated by guided imagery and imagery rescripting. These will include a case where the main focus was in establishing safety for parts of the self fragmented by a traumatic childhood, a case where there was a prominent presence of transpersonal (archetypal) imagery alongside the personal memories, and cases where the challenge was to address childhood rage that had become directed into self-hatred. These examples will serve as a platform to review Conway’s research on autobiographical memory and his theoretical model as this provides a basis for understanding the relationship between memory and imagination as well the nature of the processes set in motion by imagery rescripting. Conway’s model allows us to look at questions about the accuracy of memories, the nature of false memories, and how schemas, as the fundamental abstracted building blocks of personal meaning, are related to memory and the storage of information about events to which we have been previously exposed. This and other recent research on memory also allows for a new and open-minded look at paradoxical situations, regularly encountered by therapists, where imagery seems to reflect very early experiences such as at birth or even before, where the mainstream scientific view has been that memory is not possible. Finally, the workshop will show how the conceptual tools of the schema therapy model can be a helpful guide for therapists with respect to making active interventions in the rescripting process that can promote resolution and healing.
